Thomas Zwijsen (2012)
This is a strong contender to Maiden UniteD in doing acoustic version of Iron Maiden. Coincidentally, both are also Dutch-based creative musicians. Thomas Zwijsen is Rotterdam alumni in Classical guitar study. He was also product of Youtube phenomenon, after uploading a version of "Wasted Years" few years ago. Millions of users take notice on his creativity and the record company give him a chance to make a serious tribute album, with only a nylon guitar. Unlike Maiden UniteD which is a full band concept, Nylon Maiden is solo guitar performance in the vibe of classical and fingerstyle guitar. Some of the arrangement go to the point that additional musicians were asked to help, such as a violinist. Finally Blaze Bayley himself doing the cover on his very own song, The Clansman. Thomas Zwijsen is also the guitarist of Blaze Bayley and appear on his last solo album, The King of Metal.
Highlight of the album is The Trooper, which is catchy while still maintained the spirit of original song. Dance of Death is also interesting since the song is very much already acoustic feel. Without vocal of Bruce Dickinson the song transformed into different mood. The same thing goes to Blood Brothers, which has three guitars in the original version. Of the classic tracks, Wasted Years is always a great song to listen in any version, Thomas' version served this well as expected in the last track of the album. Then of course Blaze Bayley voice in The Clansman bring back the memory of X Factor era. The last part is The Talisman that featuring Tony Newton, again interesting choice of song from Iron Maiden trio guitarist era.
Thomas Zwijsen actually support Maiden UniteD in live tour, so this make it two different Iron Maiden project in acoustic set. Fans of Iron Maiden, especially curios fan of Blaze Bayley will enjoy this album. The whole concept well performed and this is above the standard of internet D-I-Y project. 4.5/5 rating
